How to Write an Awesome “About Me” Page

Step 1: Say Cheese!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, a picture tells a thousand words. So, use this opportunity to show your potential clients what a delight you are to work with by including a friendly picture of yourself!

I highly recommend having some professional photos taken and, if you live in Santa Barbara County, you’re in luck because I have some awesome photographer recommendations!

Step 2: Write a Captivating Introduction

Follow the Who, What, Where outline to write a little bit about who you are, what you do, and what makes your business different from your competition.

The “where” depends on your business. For example, if you’re a yoga teacher in Santa Barbara then you’ll want to include that in your introduction. If you’re a life coach or an energy healer that is able to offer your services remotely, put that down!

Step 3: It’s Not actually About You

This is a big one folks! Your potential clients aren’t coming to your website to learn about you, they’re viewing your site to see if you can help them.

Think about what problems your future clients may have, and write about how you can solve them. Be empathetic and relatable. Be their own personal problem solver!

For example, if you’re a Reiki Master think about why people might be seeking out your services. Think about how they might be struggling and how reiki can help them improve their lives.

Step 4: Get Personal, but not too personal

This is your opportunity to humanize yourself. Write a bit about your backstory and experience in your field. Be genuine, and be yourself!

Include a few sentences about why you are passionate about what you do, and the experiences that led you to get there.

Remember, there is a fine line between being personable, and oversharing. Show off your shining personality, but keep it professional.

Step 5: Add an “Action” Shot

Show off your skills with a stunning photo of yourself doing what you do best. If you’re an esthetician, include a pic of you giving a facial. If you’re a local dog trainer, add a photo of yourself connecting with your four-legged friends. The possibilites are endless!

If you choose to hire a professional photographer (which I HIGHLY recommend!) have them take a few action shots in addition to your portfolio pictures. Links above for my local recommendations!

Step 6: Include a clear “Call to Action”

Once you’ve told your future clients all about your amazing skills, and how wonderful life will be if they work with you, you’ll want to tell them what to do next. Include a specific call to action that aligns with your business and website goals.

Are you a hair stylist looking for new clientele? Wrap up your About page with a link to “Book An Appointment”. Do you make incredible wine and want your visitors to buy a bottle, or five? Add a “Shop Now” button that links to your products.

It’s also important to remember to be clear and concise with your wording. While creativity can be fun, and clever headings are encouraged elsewhere, you want your Call to Action to be simple and straightforward.
